Let’s Talk Dirty

Let’s Talk Dirty

Ever wonder what makes our products so clean? Here’s a list of what you won’t find in NEUMA formulas and the dirt on the bad stuff we choose to leave out.

We believe every human should experience high-performance haircare without sacrificing the health of your hair, your body or the planet. That’s why we’ve partnered with leading scientists who specialize in green science and like-minded ingredient manufacturers and suppliers who are committed to making a difference to create our results-driven formulas that are safe, effective and undeniably clean.

It’s not just what we put IN our products that makes them so amazing (hello plant-based and green science-derived ingredient technology) . . . it’s also what we leave OUT. We’ve chosen not to formulate with more than 15 different types of ingredients that are commonly known to be carcinogens, hormone disruptors, skin sensitizers or environmental pollutants.

Here’s our ‘No-No’ List:

Synthetic Fragrance (Fragrance, Parfum): Fragrance indicates the presence of chemical substances, many of which are known to be toxic. Who needs that? We use a blend of pure essential oils and extracts instead. Learn more

Propylene Glycol & Butylene Glycol*: This solvent penetrates the skin and can cause irritation. It’s also known to be an immune toxin. No, thank you!

Urea (Imidazolidinyl and Diazolidinyl) & DMDM Hydantoin: These are preservatives that often release formaldehyde, and that can lead to a whole load of not-so-fun side effects. See next…

Formaldehyde: This known carcinogen can cause adverse skin reactions, headaches, chronic fatigue and is extremely irritating to the eyes, nose and throat. Hard pass!

1,4-Dioxane: This sneaky trace contaminant is a byproduct of harmful surfactants that mix together. It’s found in nearly 50% of cosmetics. But not to worry, you won’t find it in ours.

Lead Acetate: It’s a color additive that may cause human reproductive and developmental harm. It’s prohibited in the EU, so we banned it from our formulas, too.

Polyquaternium 16: This ingredient is known for its volumizing and conditioning properties, but it can be potentially toxic to aquatic life. Save the fish!

Sulfate Surfactants (SLS, SLES, ALS, ALES): Don’t let these foaming agents fool you. They can actually strip your mane of essential oils, break down proteins, corrode the hair follicle, and fade your color.

Quaternium 6, 7, 15, 31 & 60: These cosmetic surfactants and preservatives are known to release formaldehyde, and that can lead to skin rashes and allergic reactions.

Phthalates: This group of chemicals used to volatilize fragrance are known to cause harm to the reproductive and endocrine systems.

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT, MI): There’s evidence that this commonly used preservative in hair care can cause contact dermatitis, eczema and other skin conditions. We’ll pass.

Food, Drug & Cosmetics (FD&C) Color***: We aim to avoid this because it’s known to be carcinogenic. Some artificial colorants may be derived from animals, and that goes against our cruelty-free standards.

Diethanolamine (DEA) & Monoethanolamine (MEA): These foaming agents may work up a lather, but they may also cause allergic reactions, eye irritation and dryness.

Glutens: We all know gluten is bad news for celiac sufferers. Hydrolyzed wheat protein, used in many cosmetics, contains high amounts of gluten which is known to cause contact dermatitis and other conditions.

Parabens (Methyl, Propyl, Butyl & Ethyl Paraben): Studies suggest that these preservatives are hormone disruptors and associated with breast cancer.

Triethanolamine (TEA) Lauryl Sulfate & Triethanolamine (TEA) Laureth Sulfate: These are a few of the harshest surfactants that are potentially drying and irritating to the skin and scalp. We use gentle alternatives. Phew!

Soy**: More than 90% of soy produced in the U.S. is genetically modified and the crops are sprayed with herbicides, so we try to avoid it.

What’s even better news? We believe in full transparency so when it comes to NEUMA products, what you see on the label is what you get. No dirty little secrets. Just clean, honest goodness in every bottle.

Enjoy! xo

Exceptions:
*Hairsprays – NEUMA uses trace amounts in its aerosol hairspray formulas while remaining in compliance with California’s stringent VOC requirements.
**neuStyling clay – Tocopherol is a naturally occurring chemical element found in a variety of foods and is commonly called vitamin E in a generic sense. Because it is a soy derivative, we have recently removed it from our formula and replaced it with a non-soy-derived derivative.
***neuBlonde platinum – Most purple shampoos use only artificially-derived colorant. neuBlonde platinum offsets much of the need for artificial colorant by supplementing with naturally derived from Grape Skin Pigment Extract and Violet.
