Chances are you already have taken a few of the below “simple” steps. Now, let’s explore a few ways you can “stretch” your green goodness to further reduce your footprint on our Earth.
Recycle, recycle, recycle
Simple: Make recycling bins available for staff and clients. Most people will choose to recycle if the option is there.
Stretch: Do a ton of highlights? Yes, even foils can be recycled if rinsed with water and then crushed into balls. See details here.
REDUCE WATER
Simple: When washing towels, make sure you have a full load. Also, regularly check your sinks, pipes and faucets for drips and leaks.
Stretch: Look at using water-efficient nozzles at the back bar to conserve water or install a water recycling system. Re-using water is one of the most common and effective ways to save water in salons.
CLIMATE CONTROL
Simple: Check for cracks in your space that let airflow in and out of your salon. The obvious places are windows, doors, ventilation ducks and the ceiling. Seal off with weather stripping to have a big impact on the amount of energy you’re using to heat and cool your space.
Stretch: Tint your windows. Even a light tint will help block some of the sun’s UV rays and reduce heat from coming in from the outside during warm months.
REPLACE YOUR LIGHTING
Simple: Replace your lights with LED bulbs. LEDs may seem more costly, but they last 25x longer and use significantly less energy.
Stretch: Install motion sensors in low traffic areas like bathrooms to take care of turning off lights for you. Also, install lights with timers for outdoor spaces and parking lots to reduce energy use after hours.
REDUCE PLASTIC
Simple: While no one wants to do more dishes, simple actions like removing single-use plastics from your salon make a big impact and show your care. Serve clients in ceramic or glass mugs and cups and instead of buying plastic water bottles, use a water filter.
