Curious about what makes Neuma hair care formulas stand out from the rest? We're happy to share what we don't include in our products and help you steer clear of icky ingredients. Say farewell to the unfavorable stuff we steer clear of and hello to clean, gorgeous hair. Let's dish on the down and dirty!

Neuma is all about keeping things natural and good for you without any questionable chemicals or additives. In doing this, we're breaking the barriers of conventional beauty and paving the way in the clean hair care world by keeping harmful toxins and synthetic fragrances out of our products. We're talking about carcinogens, hormone disruptors, skin irritants, and environmental pollutants that have no business being in hair care. Our secret? It's not just what we put into our products but also what we leave out. By partnering with leading scientists and like-minded ingredient suppliers, we've used green science-derived ingredient technology to create high-performance hair care products that are safe, effective and planet-friendly.

Here's our extensive ‘Come Clean’ list - a selection of over 15 harmful ingredients you will NEVER find in Neuma formulas and what you should keep an eye out for when shopping for any beauty product. From parabens to sulfates, we've got you covered.

Synthetic Fragrance (Fragrance, Parfum): Fragrance indicates the presence of chemical and artificial substances created in a laboratory, many of which are not tested for safety and are known to be toxic. No thanks! Instead, we use a blend of pure essential oils and extracts to craft our aromatherapeutic scents. Learn More→ https://neumabeauty.com/blogs/blog/the-stinky-truth-about-fragrance

Propylene Glycol & Butylene Glycol: This solvent penetrates the skin and can cause irritation and discomfort. It’s also known to act as an immune toxin. Hard pass!

Urea (Imidazolidinyl and Diazolidinyl) & DMDM Hydantoin: These preservatives often release formaldehyde, which can trigger all sorts of undesirable symptoms. See next…

Formaldehyde: This known carcinogen can cause adverse skin reactions, headaches, and chronic fatigue and is highly irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Beware of this notorious cancer-causing chemical!

1,4-Dioxane: This sneaky trace contaminant is produced by mixing surfactants and is found in nearly 50% of cosmetics. But not to worry! Neuma is completely free of this harmful substance.

Lead Acetate: A color additive that may harm human reproductive and developmental health.
This particular additive is so concerning that the EU has banned it completely, so we did too.

Polyquaternium 16: This ingredient is known for its volumizing and conditioning properties, but there's a catch - it's harmful to aquatic life. Don't let your beauty routine harm our finned friends. Choose eco-friendly options and save the fish!

Sulfate Surfactants (SLS, SLES, ALS, ALES): Here's the deal about these foaming agents...you might think they're harmless, but they can actually strip away your hair's essential oils, break down proteins, corrode hair follicles, and even fade the color. Yikes! Make sure you're using hair products that will protect and nourish your locks instead of causing damage.

Quaternium 6, 7, 15, 31 & 60: These cosmetic surfactants and preservatives release formaldehyde, which can lead to skin rashes and allergic reactions. Don't let these secret toxins lurk in your beauty routine!

Phthalates: This group of chemicals is used to volatilize fragrance and is known to cause harm to the reproductive and endocrine systems.

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT, MI): There’s evidence that this commonly used preservative in hair care can cause contact dermatitis, eczema, and other skin conditions. It's a no from us.

Food, Drug & Cosmetics (FD&C) Color: We aim to avoid this because certain artificial colorants are carcinogenic and can cause cancer. And to top it off, some of these dyes are made from animal products, which goes against our cruelty-free standards. We’re sticking to our natural colors.

Diethanolamine (DEA) & Monoethanolamine (MEA): Foaming agents are great for bubbles but not so great for your skin. While they may create a luxurious lather, these fragrant formulas can also lead to unwanted allergic reactions, painful eye irritation, and uncomfortable dryness.

Glutens: Even if you have celiac disease and eliminate gluten from your diet, it could still be hiding in your cosmetics. Hydrolyzed wheat protein, often found in personal care products, is loaded with gluten and can trigger a range of skin irritations and conditions, including contact dermatitis. Read your labels!

Parabens (Methyl, Propyl, Butyl & Ethyl Paraben): Studies suggest that these preservatives act as hormone disruptors and are associated with breast cancer.

Triethanolamine (TEA) Lauryl Sulfate & Triethanolamine (TEA) Laureth Sulfate: These are a few of the harshest surfactants that are potentially drying and irritating to the scalp. Our products use gentle alternatives to leave your skin and hair feeling clean and refreshed without the discomfort of dryness and irritation. Phew!

Soy*: More than 90% of soy produced in the U.S. is genetically modified, and the crops are often sprayed with herbicides, so we try to avoid it.

Transparency is at the heart of Neuma, which is why it's just as much our mission to bring you ingredient/health awareness as it is to provide the haircare world with revolutionary clean products. You won't find any hidden ingredients or dirty little secrets with us - just pure, honest goodness in every bottle. So why settle for anything less?

*Tocopherol is a naturally occurring chemical element found in a variety of foods and is commonly called vitamin E in a generic sense. Because it is a soy derivative, we have recently removed it from our formulas and replaced it with a non-soy-derived derivative with the exception of Neu Styling Clay.
